Who would have thought that a penknife would be worth £80,000? Certainly not the parish councillor who appeared on the Antiques Roadshow recently and discovered that his Swiss penknife was worth a five figure sum due to its rarity.
It just goes to prove that you never know how much your old items stored away at home are worth. Admittedly this was no ordinary penknife with the antiques expert Jon Baddeley describing it as ‘one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen on the roadshow’.
The knife had an elaborate floral design with seed pearls and other fascinating details such as a wind-up music box inside the handle of all places. You just don’t see that kind of craftsmanship nowadays.
The penknife was found to have been made sometime between 1810 and 1820 and the value placed on it led to gasps from the audience who couldn’t quite believe how much it was worth.
The penknife could well be unique hence its high value and its owner is now unsure what to do with the treasured item. Finding a buyer is unlikely to be difficult. But with an item this special it could be worth even more in years to come.
