Replace or repair a damaged floorboard in 7 simple steps

Creaky, damaged, or loose floorboards all require either replacing or repairing to keep your floor safe and attractive.

If the damage is restricted to just one or two boards, then repairing or replacing the section should be a relatively quick and easy task.

The instructions below are for removing and repairing square-edged floorboards.

Remove the whole floorboard

If the damage to the floorboard is significant, then it is often simplest to remove and replace the entire board.

  • Starting at one end of the board, insert a wide-bladed chisel into the gap between the floorboards.
  • Gently push the handle of the chisel down to slowly prise the floorboard up.
  • Repeat at the other end of the floorboard.
  • Push a wooden board underneath the floorboard to keep it slightly raised.
  • Now use a claw hammer to pull the nails from the joists.
  • Once you’ve removed the nails you should be able to lift the board free.
  • Position the new piece of floorboard and secure with nails.

Remove a section of the floorboard

If only a very small section of the floorboard is damaged, or the damaged board is in a difficult location, such as under the skirting board, then removing and replacing a small section of the board may be a better option.

  • Starting at one end of the board, insert a wide-bladed chisel into the gap between the floorboards.
  • Gently push the handle of the chisel down to slowly prise the floorboard up.
  • Repeat at the other end of the floorboard and then push a wooden board underneath the floorboard to keep it slightly raised.
  • Use a try square to mark a straight line at the section of the board you wish to remove.
  • Use a saw to cut out the damaged section.
  • Measure and cut a piece of replacement board.
  • Position the new piece of floorboard and secure with nails.

If you have tongue and groove floorboards you will need to use a drill to drill the floorboard in two before carefully removing the two halves.
