Give tired, old, wooden floorboards a new lease of life with a lick of paint.
Painting floorboards is one of the simplest and most affordable ways of changing their appearance.
As well as being a simple DIY task, painted floorboards can make a big impact, becoming a key interior feature.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing a colour for your floorboards. Here are a few things you may wish to consider before settling on a colour.
- Level of foot traffic.
- What colours will complement your existing décor.
- The size of the room.
- The amount of natural light the room gets.
Generally, paler colours will brighten up a room, giving the impression of a lighter, airier space, darker colours, however, can create more of an impact. White and other pale colours tend to perform better in areas with high foot traffic as they don’t show up scuffs as easily.
Preparing your floorboards for painting
If your floorboards have any scratches or damage, then now is the time to get loose or broken boards repaired and gaps or chips filled.
This step is extremely important if you want to get an even and long-lasting finish. When you sand the floorboards, you remove the old, existing finish and create a smooth, consistent surface to paint on.
Without adequate sanding, the floorboards may not absorb the paint evenly, resulting in an uneven, patchy finish.
If the floorboards have been painted previously then you may need to use a heat gun or paint stripper to remove the old paint before sanding.
Once the floorboards have been sanded smooth, hoover up any loose sand and debris and then wash the floor with warm soapy water and allow it to dry overnight.
Now you’re ready to paint!
Choose a specialist floor paint and be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions before painting, you’ll probably need at least two coats – good luck!
